How to Activate a BricsCAD Single User Licence Offline

Quick answer: Offline activation permanently locks a single-user licence to the specific computer and operating system you activate it on. Deactivation afterwards isn’t possible, and the licence won’t update automatically to new versions. Bricsys recommends online activation instead whenever there’s any way to get the computer online, even temporarily. If offline really is your only option, you’ll generate a licence file on a second, connected computer using the offline computer’s Host ID, then bring that file back to complete activation.

Step 1: Start Activation (on the Offline Computer)

  1. Launch BricsCAD.
  2. Depending on your situation:
    • Activating for the first time: click Activate license in the dialog that appears.
    • Replacing or upgrading an existing licence: run the LICENSEMANAGER command, click Manage License, then Modify….
  3. Click Activate manually… to open the Manual Activation dialog, and copy the full Computer Host ID shown there. You’ll need it on the connected computer.

Step 2: Generate a Licence File (on a Connected Computer)

  1. Log in to your Octave account. If this licence belongs to your company, make sure you’re logging in with the account that actually holds it, not necessarily your personal one; contact your account manager if you’re not sure which one that is.
  2. Click your username, select Manage licenses, then click the pencil icon next to the licence to open its License details page.
  3. Click Manual activation.
  4. Paste the Host ID into the Host ID field and click Activate. A licence file is generated.
  5. Click Download License File. It saves as BricsCADVxx.lic in your default downloads folder.

Transfer this file to the offline computer however you’d normally move a file between two machines, for example a USB drive.

Step 3: Apply the Licence File (back on the Offline Computer)

  1. In the Manual Activation dialog, click the browse button, select the .lic file you transferred over, and click Open.
  2. Click Activate to complete offline activation.

Can I move an offline-activated licence to a different computer later? No. Once activated offline, the licence locks permanently to that computer and operating system, and deactivation isn’t possible. This is the main reason Bricsys recommends online activation whenever you can.

Will an offline-activated licence update automatically to new BricsCAD versions? No. Unlike an online-activated licence, it won’t update automatically, this is stated directly by Bricsys as one of the trade-offs of activating offline.

I’m replacing or upgrading an existing licence, not activating for the first time. Do the steps differ? Slightly. Instead of clicking Activate license in the startup dialog, run the LICENSEMANAGER command, click Manage License, then Modify…, to reach the same activation flow.

Whose account should I use to generate the licence file? Whichever Octave account actually holds the licence. For a company-owned licence, that may not be your personal account; check with your account manager if you’re unsure.
